Love Is the Ultimate Price of Life
A Poem About Worth
By Sarah LovernPublished 6 years ago • 1 min read
Love is free
except sometimes it
isn’t.
My mother’s most prized possession
cost her
more than I’ll ever be worth.
Therapy is expensive.
Love couldn’t
override my father’s addiction.
I realize now that addiction is
just love out of control.
Loving him
cost me my sanity and independence.
I sold my heart for his
and ended up with neither.
Ever since then I’ve been struggling
just to break even,
dropping pennies of courage into my
piggy bank only to be robbed again.
We convince ourselves
that love is worth it
because we value it more
than we value
ourselves.
