LOVE BEHIND BARS

They locked away the man I loved,

Behind a wall of stone,

And left me with a broken heart,

To face the world alone.

They took your hand from mine,

I begged them let you stay,

But iron gates have no regrets,

They took my love away.

I wrote you letters every night,

And kissed each page with tears,

I promised I would wait for you,

Through all the lonely years.

Your face was fading from my dreams,

Your voice was growing weak,

I missed the warmth of your embrace,

The kisses I would seek.

They gave us just an hour to talk,

With strangers standing near,

I pressed my fingers to the glass,

And tried to hide a tear.

You told me not to waste my life,

To find somebody new,

But how could I give love away,

When mine belonged to you?

The seasons came, the seasons went,

The roses bloomed and died,

And every time I saw two lovers,

A little part of me cried.

I kept your photograph beside,

The pillow where I slept,

And all the promises we made,

Were promises I kept.

Then came the day they set you free,

I waited by the gate,

You walked towards me silently,

Afraid you'd come too late.

I held you like a precious dream,

And kissed away your scars,

For love had waited patiently,

And lived behind those bars.
