Love and War
~
My Dearest Abagail,
I promised to love you forever,
As your husband,
And you as my wife.
~
I feel it,
Tapping on my shoulder.
Death has come for me.
I can’t see him,
But I’m comforted by him.
I’m terrified.
I fear the end is getting close.
~
Tell me lies, Benjamin.
Tell me you can love her.
Tell me you can provide for her.
Tell me all will be fine.
I’m giving up.
But I have to hold on to your memory.
~
Remember me, Abagail,
When times become difficult,
When you fear the end is near,
Remember me,
And how I loved you.
~
Benjamin promised me.
I know my time has come.
My leg is broken,
Severed at the bone.
Pain robs me of breath.
I know that death has finally come for me.
~
Benjamin, please, take me home,
Let me see her beautiful face,
Let me profess my love for her,
One last time.
I’m giving up my life with her,
Let me live long enough to tell her.
~
Abagail, I love your face,
The lines of your smiles,
The darkness of your hair,
The bright green fields of your eyes.
It’s eating me alive,
Every hour that passes by.
Will my tears ever wash away your pain?
When death takes me away?
~
All night long,
I’ve thought about what I wanted to say,
How I want to tell you how much I love you.
But I want you to live,
To believe in faith,
To believe in love after death.
When my heart stops beating,
I want you to believe,
In love after death.
