Looking Down I Seen the Cracks in the Pavement

It’s surprising what one can see while looking down

Looking Down I Seen the Cracks in the Pavement

Looking down I seen the cracks in the pavement

Lines spread out beneath my feet

Some were thin and barely noticed

Some looked impossible to keep

I kept walking over each one

Like people do each day

Trying not to think too deeply

Trying not to lose my way

Funny how the broken places

Often carry all the weight

Still they stay through every season

Still they never separate

Looking down I seen the cracks

And thought of all I hide

The parts held together quietly

The things I keep inside

Nobody stops to thank the pavement

Nobody asks what it survived

People only notice smoothness

Never what stayed alive

So I walked a little slower

And something settled then

Maybe cracked does not mean ruined

Maybe it means living again
