Little Blue Line

The phrase "Love at First Sight" doesn't have to refer to romance.

My cat decided she wanted my lap, so

She stepped from the top of the couch

To my shoulder.

Then, her little paw

Sank all eleven pounds

Into my chest and

Ow!

She'd done it before, but

It had never hurt like this.

I knew.

Excitement fluttered in my throat.

I'd been trying to make you and this,

This was the first time,

This was the first indication I had that you were on your way.

That was a Monday.

Early, too early.

I had to wait four agonizing days,

Breasts tender,

Already avoiding the litter box and deli meat.

That Friday a little blue line told me

Yes!

You were on your way.

Heart flying, grin unrestrained, I announced,

I peed on a stick and it said yes!

There were so many

First Times

I saw you.

The first ultrasound of a tiny throbbing embryo,

no organs,

just mush with potential.

Later ultrasounds,

a fetus with a face.

Finally, you,

Wide-eyed,

Amazed to finally see the world.

What could possibly even count as

Love At First Sight(TM)?

I loved the idea of you

Before you started to exist.

I've loved you at every stage

Between then and now.

I'm so excited

To see what's next.
