Lily and The Storm
Could the Girl Stand Against a God?
The white cliffs of Dover plunged beneath Lily’s feet
Her gaze lay upon the sea’s unrest
Her mind bent towards the clouded west
Allow she wouldn’t, this battle to end in defeat
The thunderheads across the blue waters swept
Billowing fiercely into the sky
Reaching to the heavens high
Lily’s eyes uncovering within, secrets long kept
Waves crashed like thunder over the black sand below
The west wind blew in a gale
Like the full breath of Gaia exhaled
The lightning forked across the sky with an eerie glow
The roiling cloud tops shown bright in the Sun’s failing rays
The approaching storm began to wake
‘Twas not hobgoblin, ogre, or drake
But Modi, Thor’s son, the wrathful Storm Mage of bygone days
The cloud form arose as if from a long Winter’s slumber
Lily saw the god hooded and cloaked
Heard rumbling thunder of anger stoked
And stood as rooted tree to be his only cumber
Modi stood on clouded pedestal, revealed, far above the sea
His gaze turned slowly, yet swift for a cloud
And spied Lily on the white cliffs, unbowed
His faceless smile the symbol of hunger for mortal treachery
The Storm Mage’s heart was not evil, but broken by jilt
Norsemen… Normans, conquerors without pause
Abandoned their gods for a man on a cross
“Their punishment shall be eternal, forever their blood shall be spilt”
The clouded god raged at the girl’s defiance upon the shore
Innumerable bolts of lightning of purple and white
And deafening thunder echoed through the bight
Lily’s heart raced without fear at the coming of the son of Thor
Arms outstretched, fingers splayed, the Old Gods’ power flowed in
Her champion rose behind the Mage of Storms
Its cloud armor and cyclone blade taking form
Lightning crackling from eyes to hands, Lily levitated with the wind
Her spirit reached out to her champion, their minds became one
In her hand, Lily understood the blade
In its heart, the warrior embraced the crusade
The cyclone sword was raised, girl and warrior moving in unison
Modi turned and faced his enemy, caught not unaware
The god-magic within came in full force
Storm became maelstrom devoid of remorse
This champion shall fall, and I shall lay the girl bare
The onslaught of the Storm Mage was swift and fierce
The Old God’s might was keen and scary
Her champion struggled to shield and parry
She must find an opening and end this supernatural curse
The girl-warrior pulled back the blade, other hand raised
Modi unleashed a lightning attack
Pain seared through arm and back
But the power absorbed went to blade and blazed
The Ages of Valhalla surged through her throbbing veins
Unguarded, the Storm Mage was vulnerable
His defenses now open and penetrable
And cyclone blade pierced clouded flesh, unleashing the rains
Blade found the god’s essence, and stole it into the warrior
The maelstrom of a sudden was quelled
As the Storm Mage was run through and felled
The wrath of the god had found its superior
The victorious champion sent blade through clouded pedestal
And cyclone touched down upon the sea
Modi’s immortal power into water flowed free
Sea and sky were now tranquil and serene, dark and sepulchral
Lily stared confident at her fading champion above
Its arm-crossed form now indistinct
Their essences no longer linked
And bowed as thankful lord to servant with admiration and love
She stared out from the cliffs, the rain light upon her face
No longer will her people need worry
Of the Old God’s jealous might and fury
Of the Lords of Valhalla there remains now but a trace
“Come Lily, ‘tis time for us to be off home!”
Arrived the day before, with her mother
And father, sister, and brother
‘Twas an end to their journey through the kingdom
Her own power now reduced to a peaceful hum
She felt weary, but far from weak
With a smile from cheek to cheek
And said with a laugh, “I’m coming, Mum!”
