Lilac

A Color I Have Never Chosen

You stood in front of me wearing a lilac top

A color I have never chosen to describe anything

A color I have only ever read

A color I must have walked past before but never addressed

A thousand thoughts on standby just to not think of you

I looked down at the pavement and found cracks and curves to behold

A memory warren to help trace the origin of the color

A color I didn't learn from crayons

A color attached to flowers I've never felt

A color whose shade I was losing sight of as night fell

Before the next thought became known, I heard your voice - no words

Shaking, I found opinions in your tone I could already trust

I looked up at the sky and found the stars had dispersed

No dark network of glitter to help map out these thoughts

With no place left to turn, I stepped into my mind

But your voice found me again

Inside a moment between moments

As I was stumbling over neurons

This time you were talking to me

You asked, "What color is my top?"

I looked up, crossing paths with the color to meet your eyes

"Lavender" I answered, in case nothing were to come out of this
