Like a Thief of Furtive Glances

From across the room.

From across the room I steal a peek at your face,

Like a thief of furtive glances.

I pick the locks on the corners of your mouth,

Imagining our romances.

*

I open the doors to your windows

And gaze into your eyes,

At last this crook is caught,

But now without disguise.

*

The breath catches in my chest,

Expecting disapproval of the intrusion,

But from across the room it seemed

That I had reached the wrong conclusion.

*

Years go by, the room has changed,

You whisper in my ear,

'You stole my heart beneath its cage',

Things are not always as they appear.
