Lights in the Night Sky

Under city street lights

Standing on the sidewalk of a lonely concrete bridge

Silently I gazed down at the water and pondered my life currently not so bright

At home my family was gathered

Around a card table with pints of beer and sparkling wine glasses

Hollering cheers and jeers at suspected card cheaters and innocent cheese eaters sitting in the kitchen

So for me alone to be on this bridge

Really there was no reason

Alas I still despaired during this holiday season

In an attempt to get a grip I placed my hands on the rail that chilled my fingers despite my mittens

Inside the fleece fabric of my left hand was the source of tragedy that led me to this bridge with a heart full of agony

Just a few short months ago it was placed there by a man

Who later I assumed was going to place a bigger rock on my hand

Unfortunately fate would not aline

And a woman from his rock and roll band

His plans of marriage she would convince him to decline

Now useless and not a care what it cost

Angry, I ripped off my mitten

Slipped off the ring and gave it my best toss

Right before a sudden burst and for a moment my hearing was lost

While in my mind I'd lost all track of time

When surprised my eyes found up in the sky a shower of lights

Then another blast and more sparks were cast

Suddenly I realized it was a new year

A chance to make that man a thing of the past

And a chance to quit putting myself last
