LIFE / LIGHT

by Helen Tootsi

By Helen TootsiPublished 3 years ago 2 min read

In the end of the dock we stand,

looking for relief.

Will tomorrow bring the light?

Make me see the shades of bright?

Can it shake my belief,

that shadows rise in the night.

Feel the gray breeze,

tickles of fear run up the spine.

Feel it embrace the insides,

because there is no besides.

Afraid to jump, we stand.

Too quiet to breathe, we suffocate.

The glory we paint,

for others to see

Will slay us in dark,

Will stop us be.

So dumb to hope, too broken to risk.

Where are you now lifelight?

Cry, scream and repeat

Cry.

Scream.

Repeat.

Eyes bloodshot greeting the sun.

Cup of hope for breakfast.

In a reach of a lifeline,

smile frozen on the face.

Thirsty in oasis of a high

taking a gulp of that light.

There's that desert of despair

to gamble against.

Coming out of the fight as a winner, unknown.

Tomorrow's story remains untold.

So dumb to hope, too broken to risk.

Where are you now lifelight?

Cry, scream and repeat.

Cry.

Scream.

Repeat.

Count blessings, the nights are dark.

Shadows dance on your soul,

coming to break your neck.

Hounds brace for a bark.

Whispers of the rollercoaster howl.

Life of what we make of it.

They say, “Come on work it out

Have a drink and forget!”

Haven't seen the smooth shiver of pain,

Their ignorance blankets the truth.

“Get a grip, move around

Pick up a hobby, read a book.”

They don't know, they won’t see.

“Work out, sleep more, keep busy

Meet with friends, grab a tea.”

They don't know, they won't see

Try, smile, jump and crash.

It's hard to describe,

something others don't see.

This life being stuck

within the demons in me.

I'm a liability I fear,

for everyone around here.

So dumb to hope, too broken to risk.

Where are you now lifelight?

Cry, scream and repeat

Cry.

Scream.

Repeat.

Nicotine chasing the Stoli,

come on, tell me your story!

Anything really will do at this stage,

as long as I get out of the maze.

Keep the monsters inside,

till the moonrise they sleep.

Yet the burden is steep

of the turbulent past.

More ahead, will you last?

Best you never know,

when comes the next blow.

The insides crumble,

tryin’ to stay humble.

I call it magic, to roll the dice,

to hear you say

"None's worse

than onion fried rice. "

They will never see

what it's like to be,

in the skin of you and the skin of me.

It takes one to know one.

Pain sees pain and happy attracts joy.

For me you're never gone,

and you've never been "just a boy".

What we are is ours to be.

The ones who know will see.

It's nothing I want to share,

but the weight is too much to bear.

Cry, scream and repeat

Cry.

Scream.

Repeat.

That’s what it’s like to be,

in the skin of you and me.

Light you will always see,

the colour of joy in me.

Living in the dark of the moon,

beyond the corners of my secrets.

Inside the depths of the heart,

bedded in bubble wrap,

You are,

my lifelight.
