Letters to Judd

letter one

letter one

sometimes it’s hard to understand

why god takes the good ones first

creating us in his perfect image

but forgetting to make us bulletproof

from the dangers of this cruel world

where school shootings and suicides

are the new normal as we’ve been

desensitized to the gory violence.

sometimes it’s hard to pray

when it feels like god has forsaken you

voice trapped in your throat

knees buckling at the weight of the world

and everything you ever feared is coming true.

sometimes, we don’t foresee tragedy

lately, all we see is tragedy on the tv screens

especially when many expected good news

i was one of many expecting good news

awaiting the day we could finally say, “i found you.”

sometimes i wish i could go back to nineteen

before i read the news article

before they pronounced you dead at twenty

before my heart broke for the last time.

sometimes, i wish i could stop the heartache

oh such heartache i feel

knowing that you’re gone

and there’s nothing i can do.
