Left Talking to a Wall

(But I cannot walk away)

I walked a path for many years

I faced my storms and fought my fears

In a silent room, I shed my tears.

🧱🧱♥️♥️🧱🧱

I held your dreams with steady hands

I watched you drift from all our plans

Yet I took on all your demands.

Still, I walk this road,

Still, I hold this hope,

Still, I am by your side.

🧱🧱♥️♥️🧱🧱

I kept your light through darkest days

I’ve propped you up in so many, many ways

I learned your steps in quiet ways.

🧱🧱♥️♥️🧱🧱

You chased the world and left me still

You broke my home but I kept my will

You changed my world but live there still.

Still, I walk this road,

Still, I hold this hope,

Still, I am by your side.

🧱🧱♥️♥️🧱🧱

Crossing empty miles each night

All your echoes fade from sight

That tiny flame still burns bright.

🧱🧱♥️♥️🧱🧱

I had nowhere I could go

I could not leave you, but you know

Despite it all, I could not let you go.

Still, I walk this road,

Still, I hold this hope,

Still, I am by your side,

🧱🧱♥️♥️🧱🧱

I learned not to seek your love or will

I learned to accept it was because you were ill

I felt like I was talking to a wall.

🧱🧱♥️♥️🧱🧱

You hung on then and hang on still

You left a void I could not fill

I’m still left talking to a wall.

But still, I walk this road,

And still, I hold this hope,

But still, I am talking to a wall.

🧱🧱♥️♥️🧱🧱

[Author's note: A combination poem consisting of alternating tercets and sestet stanzas. For anyone who has played the role of caregiver for someone with a mental illness, this may ring a bell. It is not an easy path, and because of the person's inability to accept logic or reason, you are sometimes left with the feeling you are talking to a wall.]

Till next time,
