Learning To Trust The Currents

By: Adele Pena c2022

Cast to see the world before her.

Left to fend off the rising tide of survival's expectations on her own,

She studied and learned quickly to navigate the currents of challenge,

or otherwise, be swept away in the undertow of adversity.

At times, she used 'the dead man's float' to survive,

just keeping her head above the water, not really going anywhere,

but it was no way to thrive in life.

So, she learned to swim like the dolphins, studying their every move,

discovering the secrets to their ease of navigation,

but she never felt their energetic freedom

as the waves of uncertainty still wore her down.

She tried to befriend the turtles and rode on their shells.

But they never took her near shore, despite her requests.

She longed for solid ground in her life once again.

So, diving from a shell of temporary but confined solidity,

she made peace with the mysterious and fluctuating flow.

Without using another ounce of misdirected energy,

she stretched out and let the waves carry her,

trusting the unknown to provide.

Riding the waves, she made her way to more habitable shores.
