Killing the Moment

The ups and downs of love

Killing the Moment

The evening started gently,

Soft music filled the room,

The worries of the working week

Had finally lost their gloom.

Two lovers sat together,

Sharing stories, sharing wine,

A rare and precious moment

When everything seemed fine.

A comment made in passing

Was taken the wrong way,

A harmless little sentence

That changed the course of day.

The warmth began to vanish,

The smiles became restrained,

The comfort they had gathered

Was suddenly drained.

He spoke from wounded pride,

She answered from her pain,

Each word became a weapon,

Each silence brought more strain.

Old arguments awakened,

Though years had passed them by,

Bringing back forgotten hurts

Neither could deny.

The room that once held laughter

Now echoed with despair,

Two people standing close enough

Yet feeling nowhere near.

Neither wished to surrender,

Neither wished to lose,

Both determined to be right,

Neither willing to choose.

The clock moved slowly onward,

The evening slipped away,

The special plans they cherished

Were fading with the day.

She stared out through the window,

He paced across the floor,

Neither seeing clearly

What they were fighting for.

The anger kept on growing,

Fed by every glance,

Destroying what had started

As a beautiful romance.

At last the shouting ended,

Leaving silence in its place,

The hurt was written plainly

Upon each weary face.

The night became a stranger,

The warmth was long since gone,

A treasured opportunity

Had quietly moved on.

Morning brought reflection,

And truths they could not hide,

How stubborn hearts can sometimes let

Love step aside.

They saw the cost of anger,

The damage it had done,

How quickly precious moments

Can vanish one by one.

The lesson stayed between them,

Though neither spoke aloud,

love survives through understanding,

Not through standing proud.
