KAIKOURA’S SOUL

Breathing in Kaikoura's soul,

Salted air cloaks my throat

Storm-clouds loom as black as coal,

Graceful sea birds squawk, afloat.

Breaking silence, thunder crashed,

Raindrops pelted all in sight

In the distance, lightning lashed,

I rushed for cover in delight.

My footprints seemed to disappear,

Into black, volcanic sand

I knew the spirits felt me there,

Welcome, on their sacred land

I know my home forgets me, not,

I love the land that time forgot

She flows like music, through my brain,

Where snapshots of my youth remain.
