Just a flower

I am just a flower,
Or so they say,
Growing where somebody
Once threw me away.

I never asked for sunshine,
I never begged for rain,
I simply pushed my little roots
Through somebody else’s pain.

My petals are not perfect,
Some bend and some are torn,
But every little damaged bit
Remembers why I’m born.

I watched the world above me,
With colours passing by,
I saw the birds find freedom
In an unforgiving sky.

I heard the feet of strangers
Who never knew my name,
They walked straight past my beauty,
But still I bloomed the same.

The wind has tried to break me,
The frost has made me cold,
But underneath these petals
There is a heart of gold.

Don’t pick me for your table,
Then throw me when I fade,
Just leave me where I’m growing,
Among the mess life made.

For beauty isn’t always
The perfect things we see,
Sometimes it’s something battered
Still growing stubbornly.

And when my petals tumble,
Don’t think that I am gone,
My seeds will find another place
And quietly carry on.

So call me just a flower,
That’s good enough for me,
For I have grown through everything
And still chose to be me
