July Americans
Where are they?

Note: The term “July Americans” came from the late Princess Diana Spencer. She used it to describe the American tourists in the United Kingdom during the summer. I thought it was an interesting title, and it refers to the idea of celebrating a holiday when you have not shown signs of your nationality for quite some time.
This is an old piece and I discovered that this was still on my drive. Strange making all of these discoveries.

1.
Who are the July people?
They are not all UK-bound or hopping in sunny lies.
They drift here
Unnoticed
Until they sound out
questions
(why is your metrical so unimperial;
why do you let us in from our lies, etc.)
2.
They catch me unawares.
Get lost in cul-de-sacs.
Take our best players
And make us insomniacs
(no elephant required).
3.
Is it your fear that we fear?
(I am less afraid of being afraid)
Cycles like this always cycle back to us.
(Instructive through yawns and tears)
4.
Is it significant that
I’m reading Russian poetry
As I write this?
5.
I have more questions than answers,
And there is no great answer here
As more tragedies come down
With the same heat and information;
The same old sadness again betrayed.
Feeling less would be
A careless form of bliss
