It’s Embarrassing Really

People in films throw flowers in the rain.

Write songs, miss trains, ruin there own lives dramatically

In real life, apparently.

We send “You up” texts at 1:13am

And vulnerability “cringe.”

It’s embarrassing really

My friends say love is dead now.

Too expensive.

Too awkward.

Too much eye contact.

We are all supposed to laugh after compliments

Like sincerity slipped out by mistake.

A boy memorises a girl’s coffee order

And acts like it was accidental.

A girl rereads one message

Until words physically soften her hands.

Nobody admits anything first anymore

Its embarrassing really

The internet teaches us to leave people waiting

Don’t reply too fast.

Don’t care too much.

Don’t use too many exclamation marks.

God forbid someone notice your heart beating.

So instead

We create little disasters of silence,

Tiny avoidable tragdies,

While pretending we are “chill.”

And still-

Someone waits awake for another person to get home safely.

Someone hears a laugh and instantly smiles.

Someone remembers the exact date

They first felt less alone.

“Its embarrassing really,”

How deeply humans want one another.

How desperately we pretend we don’t.
