It Burns Bright in the Dark

by Rita Chun

It burns bright in the dark

You used to come home scared

Of the way I'd hold you in my sleep

But then you'd melt me

When you'd say you didn't want to touch

But kept your hand there all night

Right by the innermost part of me

Always burning, turning

Sparks of disaster into an aubade

I'd laugh, curse your name in the morning

You'd leave me more than yearning

I can only stand you in the dark

I can't see you in the light

Through gossamer curtains like webs

Spun into futures where our ends don't meet

Snuffed out, our double-edged flame

Unspoken words words whisper like ribbons of smoke

You disappear, and I regret myself
