Inner Thoughts as I Do My Hair
by Jasmine Knapper
Stars float against the black night.
I gaze, looking outside the bathroom window.
Putting my hair of coils up on my head
Getting ready and comfortable for a night of peace
in my silky pajamas and fuzzy cat slippers with the adorable ears.
Removing my makeup after a long day
rubbing off the tints of concealer from my mocha skin
I think about the starry night in front of me
as my gaze wanders to what happens at night
when most of the world is sleeping
willingly cutting themselves off
from the rest of the world
for eight whole hours
powering down and shutting off like
a phone that’s been overworked
and overheated
and in desperate need of a reboot.
There is no beautiful night
as this one. At night, it seems
right now that the possibilities are endless
and you can dream as big as you want
with no “you can’t do this, or “you must be joking”
but where dreams come true in the nighttime sky.
crickets chirping and whistling on the outside
hidden in the tall blades of grass.
What must it be like to be a star at night
bright and beaming unapologetically
fully and completely itself
where it is unheard of to dim one’s shine
eliminate one’s sparkle
A sparkle that makes one themselves
stars float against the dead of night
the planets above are invisible
as they lazily orbit the main star
the sun.
A huge star above all of the stars.
My eyes lit up thinking about the possibilities
that are as endless as the expanding mysteries of the galaxy
and beyond that. Is there anything beyond that?
one might think
to me
there is.
A whole universe beyond that
and beyond that.
If one has any imagination, of course.
I believe that God inhabits all of the universes
the ones He created
with His hand on the earth and a hand on the heavens.
Created He man and woman.
I’m sure that the stars also shined above them
the stars that God made just for them.
And that, my friends, is why night
is my favorite time of all.
