In Your Eyes I Am Your Slave
In my eyes I am my own, a slave to no man

In Your Eyes I Am Your Slave
In your eyes, I am a woman,
A slave to a man.
In mine, no man owns me,
I do what I need to, when I can.
A certificate of marriage
Doesn’t chain me to the ground.
No man will ever send me
To a dark, early grave, bound.
So tend to the children,
Help with the chores,
Do it right,
For I am no slave to the marital rights.
No, I didn’t burn my bra,
I just speak my truth.
We married too young,
And I lost all my youth.
Respect me, don’t order me,
I am not your dog.
I am a woman with fire,
Not a name lost in the fog.
You thought I was clay
You could shape with your hand,
But I am the mountain
You’ll never command.
You called it duty,
You called it love,
I call it prison,
I rise above.
I wear no chains,
I bow to none,
I’m nobody’s shadow —
I walk in my own sun.
I am my own woman.
And I always will be.
I stand my own ground,
I am a slave to no man.
