the birds made a nest in the lion's mouth
the metal teeth of a facade ornament holding their home in place
and they have no concept of the metaphor they made of themselves
content to live in a symbol of danger
the birds know not of the lion's wont to eat them alive
swallow them whole, slurping down the straw hanging now from its fangs
if only it was conscious of their presence
