In the Dark

You Lie

Why did I start down this path?

Retribution for the past.

Something you did but didn’t do—

Nothing ever happened between me and you.

But in the dark you lie awake

You lie awake, you lie in wait.

You lie to them, you lie to you,

Something you did but didn’t do.

And me asleep and in the dark,

No memory of events still in the dark.

Your arm around me in cold embrace;

Your arm around me—an iron brace.

They’ll ask you questions,

They’ve asked me too.

Nothing ever happened between me and you.

But in the dark I lie awake

And in the dark I lie in wait.

Weeks or months they said it would be,

Before this is resolved between you and me.

And in the meantime I report to you.

And in the meantime I reported you.

You watch me close, your icy stare...

You watch me close on an icy stair.

A little push is all it would take—

You lie in the dark

I lie in wait.
