A Sonnet

Had you gazed at your own, scaly image

And recognized yourself in that dark pool

You might have inaugurated an age

In which others submitted to your rule

Consciousness seems present in all life forms

However crude or shallow in some minds;

Awareness of awareness breaks these norms

And spawns thoughts of radically new kinds

You and your ancient brethren could give signs

By means of grunts or cries or roars mighty

But symbols live between these simple lines

And form languages, crude as they might be

Had you learned to tell your own, strange story

It could have preserved your fleeting glory

    This is excellent D.J., and so cleverly constructed! I really like “Awareness of awareness breaks these norms”, and your musings on dinosaurs and their inability to break through when communicating. Thoughtful and it also flows nicely🤗

  • Oh it would be so nice of the dinosaurs were able to write down all the details of their lives! Loved your poem!

    Such a great story it would be to tell. Still Jurassic Park speaks well for them. We get the gist. Well said.

  • This is superb. I love to think about what the dinosaurs could have thought about and what their consciousness looked like. Great poem!
