If you give a middle schooler a cookie, they’re going to ask for another.

And when they ask for another, they’re going to make a mess regardless.

When they make a mess, they won’t care, they’ll just walk off.

And when they walk off, you huff and you puff and clean it.

Then after you clean it all up, you tell them no more cookies.

After you tell them no more cookies, they’ll whine about it.

Once they finish whining about it, you may be able to start the lesson.

Once you start the lesson, they continue to whine anyway about the work.

After you finally get them to work, they’ll try to distract you

They’ll ask you about your day, your life, what you had for lunch

When you finally get them to quit asking, they’ll slowly get off task

Once they’re off task, they’ll whine about the cookies

And when they whine, you tell them no more cookies

And then they’ll argue about no more cookies

You tell them maybe a candy if they can behave

Once they start behaving, you think they may be able to earn a candy

Once you give them a candy, they’ll think back to the cookies.

So you tell them, if they can behave and earn it, they can have a cookie.

They try their hardest and stay on their best behavior

So then you give a middle schooler a cookie
