I Will Love You for 24,000 Years
Lucky Mantinades*
In 2013, news appeared about a newly found world, nicknamed “Einstein’s planet”, that orbits its star every 36 hours. It is located around 2,000 light-years from Earth in the Cygnus constellation. Since a year is so short on this planet, any intelligent life must be very brilliant.
-----
Will you marry me as soon as we are 5,000 years old?
It depends on whether the precursory years are bankrolled.
-----
I will love you for 24,000 years, the suns willing.
You can only hope that you will, with your wishing fulfilling.
-----
I have not slept in a year since we met on the second moon.
We will meet again in a few years if it is not too soon.
-----
Your antennae are more prepossessing every passing year.
It is on account of my unregulated atmosphere.
-----
There are planets in other constellations light-years away.
Their years are much longer but they are a short time from doomsday.
-----
Is there intelligent life elsewhere within the Universe?
The idea is both unverifiable and perverse.
-----
There is new poetry on the fifth moon called 36 5.
Thirty-six syllables on five lines recited to survive.

* A mantinada typically consists of a Cretan 15-syllable rhyming couplet. Mantinades is the plural. Dedicated to Anthi Psomiadou.
