I See You In The Light

A Poem Of Small Wins

By Kelli Sheckler-AmsdenPublished 7 months ago • 3 min read

***

haunted by your beauty

as the light reveals your shadow

another day drifts by, its duty

is to teach the things I need to know

caught up in the sad and broody

learning how to let you go

the walking man can see right through me

as the wind begins to blow

and I find my way through another day

another rising and setting sun

one step at a time, no other way

to assure my heart keeps moving on

I learned to get out of the way

if I'm meant to move beyond

the pain and trials that haunt me

reveal my final, fatal flaw

that no journey is ever complete

without enduring life, within her thraws

clinging to the promise

you are with me through it all

that joy comes in the morning

understanding that the premise

comes and goes without a warning

so, today my victory is breathing

standing through another day

when my heart and soul is heaving

I find a reason strong enough to stay

and you meet me in the shadows

bring another smile for my face

lend me a shooting star to borrow

until I can meet you in that place

but for now I take another step

one that's soon followed by another

keeping my every move in check

until, through struggle, I discover

that no matter what my heart feels

everyday comes like a gift

not all fireworks or cartwheels

but should be embraced with a kiss

because every end brings a beginning

every road leads wandering souls

a brand new start to every ending

a little hope for us to hold

another chance to find our purpose

another moment to look ahead

to take our aim and find the targets

for lipstick stains in shades of red

a victory found in changing passion

wipe off the hurt and rise above

learning that the most painful lessons

are rooted in the strongest love

so I sit her on my bedside

my feet hovering the floor

finding the strength here, inside

to make my way up and through the door

because my journey is not over

it was designed for me alone

I've spent too many days hidden under cover

it's time to take steps of my own

that lead me to that moment

the one that I was meant to find

it's time for me to own it

and leave the hurt behind

but know that you'll always go with me

I'll take you everywhere that I go

like the branches of a tree

your roots allowing me to grow

as the sun shines on my face

I know that you are here beside

the perfect blend of hope and fate

in every laugh or tear I've cried

in every moment of the day

your spirit covers where I am

though I may not see your face

giving me the strength I need to stand

till every breath I take is easier

every day offers me grace

the gray somehow is prettier

my steps have found another pace

that leads me to the finish-line

as the cheers arise around me

allowing me to redefine

becoming just who I'm meant to be

though the race we run is difficult

the sun will find its way to me

like flowers through concrete, vigilant

bringing me sweet victory

yes, I still see you in the sunlight

when the rays pierce through the clouds

and when the stars are aligned just right

I speak your name out loud

look at me, I'm still here standing

yeah, I made it through the rain

fell in the dirt, but I'm transplanting

becoming beautiful again

with every breath I am succeeding

my every step commands respect

because what once was broken is now healing

and you haven't seen the best me, yet!
