I Hunted For My Birth Mom
When I was 18

My birth mom was only eighteen.
She was not ready to be a mom.
After much thought and prayer,
She decided she could not care for me.
She gave me up for adoption
When I was two years old.
I was placed in the home
Of a couple that was well-to-do.
My adoptive parents told me the truth
When I was six years old.
I did not know what to say at first.
Then I learned to love them.
I had mixed feelings
And wondered about my birth mom.
My "parents" showed me pictures,
I could tell she was my mom.
When I was ten-twelve years old,
I found out my birth mom's address.
I wrote her letters from time to time,
But I never heard back from her.
I learned to love my adoptive parents
Like they were my birth ones,
But I needed to talk to my real mom.
There were questions I needed to ask her.
My birth mom finally answered
One of the letters I wrote.
She gave me her phone number.
I was excited and nervous.
When I was sixteen, I called her.
Then I heard her say "hello"
I told her I knew what she looked like.
Many questions I then asked her.
Both of us called each other.
She answered my questions the best she could.
When I was eighteen we met.
I gave her a great big hug.
I was grateful that we met.
Then I let her go back home.
I hoped one day to see her again.
I wanted my kids to look like her.
