I Hear Music

When I look across the trees,

I hear music.

A symphony of waves fills me as the wind moves the shoreline oh so slightly to the right... My right. A subtle rippling effect accompanies the breeze as deep evergreen becomes a brightened chartreuse. A layering of sound becomes visible as oaks lean and still stand tall against the bristling maples and rustled brush.

While a family of ducks lulls past my feet,

I hear music.

A chorus of quacks that makes a natural sense, more easily divined than translated. An order from mother to stay in line keeps the little ones from getting too close, yet also keeps them perfectly in sync with each other. A belief that these creatures are part of it all plants a smile with solid roots; I am with love.

As I listen to the water lap against the dock,

I hear music.

A distant boat leaves its Kelvin wake, alerting me and pointing in her direction. A gentle woman lies, a great love of mine, moored, yet adrift. A paddleboard between her and the lake, she steadies as the waves propel her further from me.

Ever still, she rests and will until sated, and she will hear the music with me.

I am a non-binary, trans-masc writer. I work to dismantle internalized structures of oppression, such as the gender binary, class, and race. My writing is personal but anecdotally points to a larger political picture of systemic injustice.
