I Got You

No Matter What

A best friend.

That was all he wanted, from her.

He heard about her work ethic, her attitude;

But didn't discover what he called that

'hmm' factor

until he saw her himself for the first time.

Friendship.

That was all she wanted, from anyone.

Until he took her under the stars

onto the damp grass

and asked if he could just

hold her.

No funny business.

It was during the pandemic.

They wore masks, forcing each other

to impress by personality.

Which they did.

But when they sat down for lunch and those

masks came off

He wasn't taken aback by her beauty,

in fact he'd been with more symmetrical,

more voluptuous, more promiscuous girls.

But there was something in her.

Something he couldn't place. That

'hmm' factor.

He had to get to know her.

She wasn't impressed by his charm,

in fact he was just one of many guys on

this job that wanted to 'get to know her'.

But there was something about him.

He seemed fun, passed every little

test.

She'd get to know him a little better.

He knew just where to touch her

on her lower back.

He wouldn't kiss her.

Night after night of

cuddling under the stars,

talking about how they're just

friends

and how nothing more could ever be.

She knew just how to kiss him,

right before he left.

She'd had enough of his hesitance

and ran her fingers through his hair as she

pulled his face closer to hers.

Passion.

A raw, deep connection.

They weren't just friends; they were

much more.

But what were they?

They couldn't commit; the reasons are irrelevant.

They comforted each other, shared an

honesty

that surpassed any other they shared previously.

But even if they were meant to be

together,

were they really meant to be?

"Doesn't matter," he muttered through the

lump in his throat.

"No matter what?" she asked, eyes filling like

tiny little reservoirs of tears.

He smiled as a simple stream formed down his cheek,

"I got you."
