I’d Rather Be “Too”

An ode to embracing Muchness

By Eva A. SchellingerPublished 2 years ago • 1 min read
An actual photo of myself

“Too Much”

I’m weary of being told I’m “too much”—

Too sensitive,

Too talkative,

Too excited,

Too bubbly,

Too nerdy,

Too short,

Too plump.

Too loud,

Too quiet.

I’ve been “too” for everyone, it seems—

A constant shrinking of myself to fit into frames

That were never meant to hold me.

But now?

When someone dares to call me “too,”

I feel a fire rising in my chest.

I want to tell them to leave my orbit,

To take their judgment elsewhere,

Because I’ve outgrown apologies for the brilliance of my muchness.

So I’m not sorry.

Not now, not ever.

I’ll live my life too loud,

Too chatty,

Too sensitive,

Too imaginative,

Too creative.

I’ll revel in being too much,

Because I know this truth:

It’s far better than being “not enough.”

And I promise this—

No one will ever feel “too much” in my presence.

After years of trying to be less for others,

I refuse to make someone else feel small.

I am done dimming my light.

I am done being less.

I am Muchness Incarnate,

And I will never shrink again.
