I BURIED YESTERDAY
I carried yesterday at dawn,
Towards an unnamed grave,
It kicked and screamed inside my arms,
And begged me to be saved.
I brought the clock that stopped the night,
You closed your eyes on me,
Its hands were frozen at the hour,
My heart lost every key.
The mist lay heavy on the stones,
The trees were bent in prayer,
I thought that I had come alone,
But grief was waiting there.
I dug a hole with bleeding hands,
Beneath the winter sky,
Then placed our broken memories,
Where forgotten moments lie.
I buried every photograph,
Each letter and each rose,
But could not bury your last breath,
Or how your eyelids closed.
I covered everything with earth,
And whispered my goodbye,
Yet something underneath the ground,
Began again to cry.
It sounded like the voice I had,
Before you went away,
The voice that laughed and trusted life,
Before that dreadful day.
I fell beside the open grave,
And tore the earth apart,
For yesterday was never there,
I’d buried my own heart.
The morning sun began to rise,
But gave me little light,
Some people wake to brand-new days,
While mine remain at night.
I left the clock among the flowers,
But heard it tick behind,
For yesterday is never dead,
When living in the mind.
