I am an art nob

Oh yes I am

I talk about art

Whenever I can

You might think I know lots

Of fun facts and figures

But mostly I make up

Stuff

I’m such a blagger

I sometimes do little talks

About things at the Tate

I avoid all the history

Try to relate

What I see and more crucially

Say what I feel

If you want information

Baby

Google's for you

Yes I am an art nob

I'm sure you'll agree

Please read my art-icles

I hope you will see

Something to catch your eye

In old master paintings

Sculptures and sketches

And grand installations

Photographs too

Black/white or colour

Whatever you see as art

It really don't matter

So all I can say to you

Brother and sister

Is are you an art nob

Like me

Don't be shy

Shout from the rooftops

Light up the sky

Say

I am an art nob

Can't tell you why

If, like me, you are an art nob, you really should have a go at the One Work challenge, if you haven’t already. You don't have to be a nob to enter, of course, and neither do you need to be an art expert. All you need to do is to look at a work of art (in person or online) that says something to you, and write what you see, think and (most importantly) feel. Still $5 prizes to win and lots of entrants have already been awarded Top Story accolades. Such is the inspirational value of art. Check out some of the entries and think of another work that connects to any one of them. Connected by subject, artist, or something triggered deep down inside of you. Easy-peasy!

What is a nob?

Sources suggest two distinct meanings, and various etymological origins.

Meaning one: nob - humorous or derogatory - British slang for an important or self-important person, a rich person or person of noble, aristocratic, background. Often used in jest, sometimes in fun and not always derogatory. Origin is thought to be either abbreviation of "noble" or a derivation ("nabob"), of the Hindi/Urdu word "nawab", as used by 19th century British colonials in India.

Meaning two: nob or knob - vulgar and derogatory - British and Australian slang for penis, derived from the appearance and comparison with a door knob or other rounded handle.

What is an art nob?

You tell me. Are you an art nob or do you know an art nob or have heard/read, an art nob's work? This poem/article was inspired by a window display in an art supply shop along the Northdown Road in Cliftonville, Margate, English Kent Coast. I must pop into the shop to see if I can get one of those art nob masks.

We could set up a movement like the Guerrilla Girls, as a people's art promotional collective.

Art nobs support the Guerrilla Girls

But Guerrilla Girls say

Kind of you Ray but

Thanks and no thanks
