One work: A speck that speaks

I saw you today

Saw you complete and whole within your work

Discovered in a tiny sliver of Emerald Green

Taken from your Sick Child

Is an artist's DNA

Hidden there within

Each fragment of their work

Or am I just imagining

Something beyond the real

I like to think that

Everything you ever did as an artist

Reflects in everything else you did

And that this colour selected

For spectral analysis

Was chosen with purpose

To indicate

The whole

Of you


Yesterday, I was delighted to have had the opportunity to visit an art conservation studio. There, in the ultra-modern “science” lab, I was shown a tiny spec of emerald green paint taken from a Munch painting destined for conservation. I held the slide, containing this fragment, with something of reverence.


Though not an entry to the One Work challenge, this verse connects to:


Edvard Munch, the Sun, which hangs in Oslo University, also reminds me of a much darker painting from the war in 1915:
