Hunger & Shame
Can you spare a bite to eat?
My stomach twists, my hands shake,
the kind of hunger that gnaws deep,
leaving nothing but cold and ache.
I had a home, a job, a car,
stood proud with pockets full and fed,
but I married a dirty thief,
he left me starving here half dead.
He took the lot, my money too,
left me drowning in his crime,
now shame clings tight like winter frost,
as I beg for nickels, I beg for time.
No home, no coins to weigh my palm,
just hollow ribs and tired feet,
wandering streets where pity’s rare,
where shame and hunger always meet.
So if you can, just spare a bite,
not for thanks, nor debt to pay,
but so I might, for one more night,
keep the starving dark at bay.
