How to Grieve a Building
Stuff Comfort into Poetry
Close eyes
Conjure brick, metal
Outstretch palms
Rub cinderblock
Finger trace chalkboard
Picture doors, heavy
Slip feet cross linoleum
Run courses through hallways
under stairwell nooks
Spin office chairs
Prop doors open, heavy
Silent, glimpse through
Catch the residue of
Hands raised
Backpacks
Roster
Thumb stapled corners
still warm from copier
Fluttered buzz of florescent
Desk veneer peeling at the corner
Close eyes
Call forth the room
Experiment in movement
Cork board pitted
Uniformed rows
desks gleaming
aisles of graded memory
Dust crowned titles, opened
Penned notations
Drawer, bottom right
Contents stuffed
block lettered words
Scream into classroom
Emptied.
.
Close eyes.
Resurrect flags
of former students
Pin each one back to ceiling
Make poetry
in order to
find comfort in grief
I never wanted to leave.
