How to Cast a Spell that Wakes Up a Sleepwalker
A Love Poem
I was Edward
Scissorhands-ing my way
through life, as always; record-
scratching and cutting
rug, sleepwalking
along cliff edges at the end of
the world, and you, curled
up in Nebraska—
I'll get to the point: the first time I saw you
is framed and hung in the foyer of my memories:
we met in a library, jazzed
up to meet people and game: role-playing
characters with abandon
with abandon—how could I not
fall for you: a woman who burps vehemently,
drinking tall cans of kombucha,
a trail of wet rings on wood surfaces in your wake
because who needs coasters? And that's really my point:
I was coasting, a trickle of water
looking for nothing
but the lowest elevation I could find,
and you woke me up with a spell—
Verbal, Material, & Somatic
components—a swish and a flick.
And yeah, waking life is pain,
a Sisyphus climb: we encounter oppositions:
sickness & health, poverty & wealth;
but there's no going back to sleep after you;
not quite love at first sight—
the love took more looking—
but pretty damn close.
