How High Is A Wave?

High enough to make me ask

How High Is A Wave?

How high is a wave
When it reaches the sky,
Does it tickle the clouds
As the seabirds fly?

Does it stand like a giant
With foam on its head,
Then fall on the shoreline
And tumble to bed?

I watched from the sand
As one started to grow,
It rose from the blue
With the world down below.

It gathered the sunlight
And carried it high,
A mountain of water
Climbed into the sky.

I thought it might catch me
And pull me away,
But it curled like a ribbon
Then burst into spray.

It scattered its diamonds
All over the shore,
Then ran back for others
And came up once more.

Each wave was much bigger
Than waves gone before,
They marched like an army
Towards the warm shore.

But none came to harm me
They bowed at my feet,
Then left little seashells
So polished and neat.

One carried a bottle
That travelled for years,
Inside was a letter
Still stained by old tears.

It said, to the finder
Wherever you be,
My heart crossed the ocean
Please set my heart free.

I opened the bottle
And whispered, you’re free,
Then gave the old letter
Straight back to the sea.

A wave rose before me
As tall as a tree,
It lifted the letter
And carried my plea.

How high is a wave?
As high as a prayer,
As high as a memory
That floats through the air.

As high as the hopes
We are frightened to save,
For dreams touch the heavens
Like one mighty wave.

The ocean grew quiet
The sun started low,
The wave lost its height
But continued to flow.

I walked from the shoreline
With sand in my shoe,
While one final wave
Shouted, I’ll wait for you.
