How Could You Not See That All I Wanted Was Love?
A poem by Lizzy Pacem, written in 2019 after a day of the cold shoulder.
- How could you not see that all I wanted was love,
When I kept myself busy for twelve long hours a day
So I wouldn't have to dwell on the lonely ache of not having you by my side -
Just for you to come home and ignore me?
- How could you not see that all I wanted was love
When I was wrapped up in our bed waiting for you to join me...
And you chose a cigarette and a half-hour discussion
With a neighbor you don't even like...
Over me...?
- How could you not see that all I wanted was love
When I pulled my aching body out of bed
To walk down to the pool with you because you wanted to swim
And then dove into freezing cold water on an already cool evening
Just to be close to you...
And all you wanted was your space,
And your workout,
And your peace?
- How could you not see that all I wanted was love
When I laid in bed next to you in my pajamas,
Ready to sleep soundly in your arms -
And you rolled away from me...?
- How could you not see that all I've ever wanted
Since I first met you...
Since I said "yes"...
Since I said "I do"...
Is your love?
