HOPES SHATTERED

The itch is incessant

**

The sun was just rising as I rose from my bed.

“I’ll make my coffee, then grab my camera,” I said.

It’s the perfect day for a walk in the park.

The sunrise is perfect; it’s no longer too dark.

With my coffee in one hand, I loaded the car:

Camera, lenses, a muffin – well, I won’t go too far.

The park is only ten miles away.

Taking pictures is a fun time to spend any Sunday.

What I’d forgotten was the dew on the ground.

It made the heat of the sun bring misquotes around.

With some bites on my ankles, and more on my arms,

I ran to my car in a state of alarm.

Once in the house where I wanted to scream,

I headed to my bathroom for my anti-itch cream.

From now on when the urge to take pictures blooms,

I’ll wear socks and long sleeves and wait until noon!
