Hope Flickers

A free verse poem

By Lindsay SfaraPublished 5 months ago 1 min read
Columbus, OH - Photo is my own

It feels heavy on your chest,

being engulfed in a thick shadow,

and having it seep into your skin.

.

It feels sickening

as it slows the body, mind, and spirit;

and everything is a dull numbness.

.

The darkest of shadows teems over the world.

All is gray and black

and not a thing seems right.

.

Days pass.

Months pass.

You watch it all go.

.

It’s like watching a movie,

and yet, you know you are to be the lead role

and not a mindless bystander.

.

It’s lonely.

It’s empty.

It feels like something is wrong with you.

.

But something still flickers within

despite the thick darkness

and poison inside.

.

It’s a new, playful idea,

the smallest of smiles on your face,

and a ray of sun from the sky.

.

Thoughts become lighter.

The body moves better.

The spirit begins to lift.

.

Breathing becomes easier

as eyes are open to a new brightness,

and for once, the numbness is gone.

.

The movie feels different

as it plays around you instead of from afar.

You are finally taking the role you deserve.

.

It’s not lonely.

It’s not empty.

There is nothing wrong with you.

.

Tended to, the flicker will grow,

but will also never fade.

Hope is always here.

Lindsay, I love how this poem speaks of despair and then that glimmer of hope we all need to keep alive inside ourselves. You did a beautiful job!!
