Holding On To Nothing

My hands are empty and my lips lost where did you go?

Holding On To Nothing

I keep holding on to nothing,
To something that has gone away,
I tell myself it might return,
But know it will not come today.

I look for signs that are not there,
I read between the words you said,
I search for something I can hold,
But find an empty space instead.

I gave my heart, I gave my time,
I gave more than I should have done,
I kept believing there was hope,
But now I know there was none.

Why do I keep remembering,
The things I know I cannot change,
Why do I still look back sometimes,
When everything now feels so strange?

I wish that I could let it go,
And leave the past where it belongs,
But every time I try to walk,
My heart keeps telling me I am wrong.

Perhaps I held on far too long,
Perhaps I feared the empty space,
Perhaps I only wanted back,
The happiness I used to chase.

Now I am learning how to leave,
Without expecting anything,
Some things are better left behind,
No matter what the memories bring.

So I will stop holding on now,
To something that was never mine,
I will accept the way things are,
And leave the past behind this time.
