Here Today Gone Tonight

That is how you play at love

Here Today Gone Tonight

You stood in my doorway with rain in your hair

Smile full of chaos and reckless young air

Talking of futures like they could not break

Promises made for the moment they’d take

By morning your laughter still filled up the room

Warm on the sheets with the scent of perfume

Then evening arrived with its cold empty light

And somehow you vanished completely by night

No note on the table, no sound on the stair

Only your absence still hanging in air

Cup left half empty beside the old sink

Like you had disappeared quicker than thought can think

I searched through the streets where the late buses crawl

Questioned the silence of each narrow hall

Still nothing answered except falling rain

Mocking the hope that you’d return again

Here today gone tonight, quick as a flame

Leaving behind only echoes and blame

Some people enter your life like a storm

Then vanish before your heart can grow warm

Weeks drifted onward through smoke-coloured days

Yet part of me stayed in your wandering gaze

Missing somebody impossible to keep

Turns every memory painfully deep

Perhaps you were never intending to stay

Maybe goodbye lived in you from first day

Still sometimes late when the city burns bright

I swear I still feel you somewhere tonight
