He Talks Back With His Eyes
My dog the best friend in my world

He Talks Back With His Eyes
He sits as though the chair was placed for him alone,
balanced, certain, one paw lifted in mid thought,
his head tilted slightly as if waiting for the rest,
not impatient, not distracted, simply present.
I speak to him the way I speak to someone I trust,
in full sentences, with pauses and quiet meaning,
about the day, the weight of it, the small victories,
moments that slipped through my hands unnoticed.
His ears catch every change in my voice,
every soft rise and fall I did not plan,
and when I stop, he does not rush the silence,
he lets it settle where it belongs.
There is something kind in the way he listens,
no judgement resting behind his eyes,
no need for clever answers or advice,
just the simple act of staying with me.
The room feels warmer when he is near,
as though comfort has learned his shape,
and even the quiet seems friendlier,
less sharp around the edges than before.
I tell him things I would never say aloud elsewhere,
not because they are dark or shameful,
but because they are fragile,
and deserve a listener who will not break them.
His tail moves gently, a slow and steady rhythm,
not excitement, not boredom, just understanding,
as if he knows that sometimes words are heavy,
and need to be carried, not solved.
People smile when they see me talking to him,
as if it is a harmless habit,
something sweet, something slightly foolish,
but they do not hear the way he answers back.
He answers in the soft focus of his gaze,
in the calm patience of his breathing,
in the way he leans closer when my voice lowers,
as though my heart has spoken first.
Love lives here, unannounced and unashamed,
in shared space, in ordinary moments,
in the quiet knowledge that I am heard,
even when no words return.
