He Came Back Too Late

A love lost forever

He Came Back Too Late

He stood where silence used to live,

in the doorway I once closed for good,

time hanging heavy in his eyes,

like he never left—just misunderstood.

I felt the past rush through my chest,

old wounds remembering their names,

every word we never said

still flickering in quiet flames.

He spoke like nothing had been broken,

like distance never carved us thin,

but I could hear the years between us

echo louder than his skin.

My hands forgot the shape of his,

yet trembled like they always knew,

some loves don’t die, they just lie still

waiting for a breath of you.

We walked through ghosts of who we were,

two shadows stitched in yesterday,

trying to fit our older hearts

into what had slipped away.

He said he never stopped loving me,

I said love isn’t always enough,

truth sat bitter on my tongue

because healing had made me tough.

I saw the boy I used to hold,

inside the man who came back late,

but I am not who I once was,

and love can’t always outrun fate.

So I let him go a second time,

softer now, but just as true,

because some returns aren’t meant to stay—

just to remind you who you grew into.
