They stood upon their battlefield, pistols poised and drawn
One to earn the name of fame, the other dying here at dawn
She'd never understood his ways, his need to shoot through life
And though he knew he'd loved her well, he'd never call her wife.

Now he's running from the law, his shadow on the plain
Running away from all he's known, gunslinger in the rain.
He'd done the best that he knew how, knowing that he'd been right.
Somehow she'd have to understand, gunslingers had to fight!

Standing on an empty street, the reins still in his hand
Hat brim strained against the wind, he'd dared to take his stand.
Baptized in the pouring rain, he held his hat upright
Waving it to her empty window, he faded from the light

Now he's running from the law, his shadow on the plain
Running away from that woman he loves, gunslinger's life is pain!
He'd done the best that he knew how, praying that he'd been right
Someday he hoped she could understand. He was born to fight!
Always running from himself, a mere shadow among men,
Fated to travel into the dark, again, and again... and again.
