When did you find the time to get your masters
In managing my ego?
Your doctoral thesis could be in how to love me
Defending every point without ever having to lecture
I hope to God you never publish it
Because I don’t want anyone to know me like you do
-
I feel like I still only have a bachelor’s
Rudimentary understanding of you
Even if the assignments are over my head
I will gladly attend to you every day
Staying up late for night classes
-
Our love is elementary and elemental
Never periodic
And if I had to, or still could,
I’d run a mile or more with you every day
But our hour of P.E. can be more intense
And much more fulfilling
-
As we enter another summer session
Before the next semester
And our 25th year
I want to thank you for all the lessons
That made me the man I am
And the men I am not
-
Because they could never understand
There is no graduation day
Even if life only shifts by degrees
There’s always more to learn
-
So every day I will study
No matter how well-versed or lettered I become
Because it is the experience of you
Only you
That matters
