Once we were a couple

And a happier couple you'll never see,

I was your life, your whole life

As once you were to me.

***

Things went wrong

As I've written before,

The going got too tough

And I walked out the door.

***

I never wanted to leave you

You were still the love of my life,

So I come back again and again

And should have become your wife.

***

But alas it was not to be

And we parted for the last time,

My heart was so broken

For you were no longer mine.

***

I don't know how it come about

That you were hit by a car,

But three days ago you died

And it tore a hole in my heart.

***

As I sit here writing

Your body's being laid to rest,

I can't be there with you

So this is my goodbye Dearest.

***

There's so many things

That remind me of you,

From places we used to go

To things we loved to do.

***

For instance, this week alone

The movie Convoy's on TV,

I remember the night after we saw that

You took my virginity.

***

I heard a song that used to be ours

And promptly burst into tears,

Oh how I regret that

We wasted all these years.

***

An ID bracelet, an engagement ring

Is all I've got to keep,

So I pray that you're somewhere happy

And take comfort that one day we'll meet.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
