FROM THE RAIN CAME THE BABY

From the rain came the baby,
from thunder, love and night,
a tiny seed began to grow
beneath my heart so light.

I did not know that evening
when we danced upon the ground,
another little heartbeat
would soon become our sound.

The rain had kept our secret
beneath its silver streams,
then placed a child inside of me
and stitched her into dreams.

She kicked when storms were coming,
she slept when skies were blue,
as though she still remembered
the night I danced with you.

And when her time was ready,
the heavens opened wide,
the same old rain came pouring down
and would not leave my side.

She entered crying loudly,
with raindrops on the glass,
a little storm with tiny fists
who had arrived at last.

Her eyes were grey as thunderclouds,
her hair was dark as night,
but when they placed her in my arms,
the whole world filled with light.

From the rain came the baby,
from two hearts running wild,
the storm that soaked our naked skin
had given us a child.

And every time the rain falls now,
we tell her where she came—
not from a quiet summer’s night,
but thunder, love and rain.
