We took them from the prairies.
Left their family lives behind,
We locked them, and confined them,
Put shackles on their minds.
Their faces we tied with leather,
We nailed shoes upon their feet.
We placed steel into their mouths.
And saddles, for our seats.
We never saw the fear in them,
Nor did we seem to care,
To us, they were just workers,
Not lonely, frightened mares.
And so, these helpless prisoners,
Grew used to slavery.
They worked and slaved for us alone,
I'd love to set them free.
Free to roam the prairies,
And gallop with their herd.
Up across the mountains,
As carefree, as the birds.
I see the proud black Stallion,
High up on the hill.
He looks upon the plains below,
His herd they all stay still.
Then he calls out loud and clear,
We're free to graze and roam.
He rears up on his mighty legs,
The prairie's now our home.
